Moving to Arkansas doesn't always mean scenery and greenery. There are areas in the Natural State where you should be cautious for a number of reasons. We can have some pretty unpredictable weather here, too. We are a great place to live or visit, but that doesn't mean there aren't dangerous things in Arkansas. Here are just a few that you'll want to avoid while living in Arkansas.
1. Street Crime
It's not a pretty topic, but violent crimes happen more often than they should. The capital city of Little Rock, its twin North Little Rock, and Pine Bluff all have higher-than-average crime rates. The overall rate of violent crime in Arkansas is the fourth-highest in the nation.
2. Theft/Home Invasion
Burglaries in central Arkansas are unfortunately becoming more prevalent. Over the last decade, there have been an increase in burglaries that include violence. Victims are often either shot or attacked in addition to having their property stolen.
3. Tornado Destruction
Twisters are no joke, and definitely rank among the most dangerous things in Arkansas. We've got our fair share of tornadoes annually, with an average of around 39. Emergency sirens have improved over time, but preparation is only one part in keeping your family safe. There's a great deal of luck and being in the right place at the right time when considering survival rates of these deadly storms.
4. Hunting Accident
Most Arkansas hunters have no problems practicing gun safety and being responsible when out in the woods. Unfortunately, there are a number of people who die each year due to faulty physical or visual communication between hunters. It's not uncommon at all to hear of deaths in the Natural State woods during hunting season.
5. Vehicle Accident
No matter how careful of a driver you are, our twisting and turning roads can confuse many motorists. It only takes one minor mistake to risk a severe or fatal accident. Most years see around 450 fatalities on Arkansas roads.
6. Drowning
Arkansans love to get out on the water. We've got so much around here to enjoy, it's hard not to! Unfortunately, not everyone practices the best water safety tips when out on a boat or swimming in the water. Never misjudge a river's current, never go swimming without a companion, and never combine drinking with activities on the water. Stay safe out there!
