Every state has its doozies when it comes to strange or odd town names, but Arkansas is definitely in the running for weirdest. It's interesting to try and trace the origins of these towns to see what exactly the settlers were thinking when they came up with these weird names. We could all use a laugh right about now, and these towns with strange names in Arkansas are sure to make you smile! In no particular order, here are some of our favorite towns in Arkansas with some of the strangest names you'll ever see.
11. Blue Ball: One can only imagine the depths of marital frustration undergone by this town's founder when he finally settled on a name.
Blue Ball is located on the west central border of Arkansas in Scott County.
10. Threeway: This populated place is located in the town of Etowa, Arkansas and we won't pass judgement on any level on the open-mindedness of its citizens.
Etowa (including Threeway) is in Mississippi County, Arkansas.
9. Bald Knob: This White County town is usually the first to come up in "weird town names in your state" conversations.
Bald Knob is particularly known for its popular annual strawberry festival, Homefest.
8. Romance: There are some areas in this small White County town that allow it to live up to its name.
Romance, Arkansas is located about 16 miles northwest of Beebe and less than 5 miles east of Mount Vernon.
7. Possum Grape: This oddly named locale is in Jackson County, about five miles outside of Bradford.
Jackson County is located in northeast Arkansas.
6. Toad Suck: The pride of Perry County has a strange name that has spawned a popular park, an annual end-of-spring festival that attracts statewide revelers, and many questions in the mind as to its origins.
Toad Suck, Arkansas is also listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
5. Monkey Run: The small community of Monkey Run is located in a narrow valley on the western border of modern-day Baxter County.
Despite the community's awkward name, during its heyday in the early 1920s the community was home to a number of thriving businesses and as many as seven zinc mining operations.
4. Goobertown: This oddly named location is an unincorporated community in Craighead County, Arkansas.
Goobertown is located on U.S. Route 49, approximately 10 miles northeast of Jonesboro.
3. Greasy Corner: This community is located at the junction of Arkansas Highway 50 and Arkansas Highway 149, about four miles northeast of Hughes, Arkansas.
The St. Francis County community acquired its current name when a farmer dining in the restaurant was given a plate with a grease stain by an auto mechanic. He commented that the community should be called "Greasy Corner" instead; the name has been used ever since.
2. Stinking Bay: This unincorporated community is located within Arkansas County, Arkansas and has been noted multiple times for its unusual name.
Stinking Bay appears on the Crocketts Bluff U.S. Geological Survey Map.
1. Weiner: This Pointsett County, Arkansas town is proud of its unusual name and uses the town name to every advantage!
Weiner, Arkansas is included in the Jonesboro, Arkansas Metropolitan Statistical Area.
