It's not at all uncommon to hear about folks looking to get "away from it all," whatever that means to them. Typically, what they mean is an escape to a low-population area - something quiet and quaint, maybe without a cell signal, just to spend some time away from the hustle and bustle of the real world. Arizonans looking to get away from it all might want to consider really getting away: did you know that the Copper State is home to the single most remote town in the United States - if not the world? It's true - Supai is a stunningly beautiful, peaceful village located at the bottom of the Grand Canyon. If you can get to it, you've earned it... and it's worth the effort. Come out to the most remote town in Arizona - if you can - and learn what "away from it all" really means.
There are three ways to reach the Village of Supai:
By foot, by pack animal (horse or mule), or by helicopter. Most folks opt for the first two options - after all, the adventure is part of the fun.
You'll take Route 66 to Indian Road 18. From there, you'll go 64 miles to Hualapai Hilltop.
From there, it's an eight-mile trek down into the Grand Canyon to reach Supai and all the wonders contained therein.
Of course, you can't just wander to the Hilltop and expect to be granted access to the village.
A highly sought-after permit is required, for which there's an annual lottery (usually during the month of February) to determine who receives one.
If you're one of the lucky winners, congratulations: you're going to the most remote town in the United States.
...which, by default, makes it the single most remote town in Arizona.
It's the epitome of peace and quiet. After all, it's the only place left in the United States where the mail is still carried in and out by mule.
As of the 2010 census, the population of Supai was just over 200 people. Unfortunately, data is not available for the 2020 census as of the time of this writing - but it's likely remained around the same.
It's a very different way of life than most are accustomed to, but we promise it's worth every moment spent trying to reach it. There's a general store, some unique lodging options, and, of course...
...the legendary Havasu Falls, a 100-foot-tall waterfall famous for its incredible beauty, is just 10 minutes away.
A trip out to Supai really, truly is the dictionary definition of "getting away from it all", but it's important to remember that we are visitors to this incredible land. The folks who call it home have been here for thousands of years, and their way of life is well-preserved. Please respect the folks who live here - and the land - and pack out everything you pack in (if you don't get the chance to properly dispose of it).
