There are a handful of things most Alaskans have done at one point or another, from wearing Alaska Grown sweatshirts to repping a frozen snot drip as you walk into the grocery store. Sure some Alaskans that live out in the bush may not have experienced all of these things, but they are pretty spot-on for most. But most of us have experienced some of these unique things about living in Alaska. Now let's have a good chuckle at the truth behind unique things about people in Alaska...
1) Been caught off guard a little too close to wildlife.
I know I've had my fair share of close encounters, in town and out of town. Life in Alaska brushes up close agains wildlife encounters pretty often. Even Anchorage, the largest city, has a resident population of over 3,000 moose!
2) Repped the Xtra Tuffs without flinching.
All Alaskans have worn a pair of Xtra Tuffs with an outfit that just doesn't jive. We don't care, our feet are happy! Plus people from Alaska know, that keeping your feet dry, keep you happy.
3) Slipped somewhere embarrassing.
Whether it's in your own driveway or in front of the grocery store entrance, all Alaskans have slipped and fell on their booty at LEAST 10 times. We may not close down businesses for blizzards, but we will close down if there’s a lot of ice around.
4) Stood in awe under the Northern Lights.
We've all chased it down and danced under its playful colors. This is one amazing thing that every Alaskan gets to experience, and it’s something we never take for granted.
5) The dark commute.
There has been a time at least once where you've left your house for school or work and the sun has yet to come up. By the time you close up shop and head home for the day the sun has already dropped below the horizon and you're stuck driving home in the dark again! That's one long day without any sunlight! This can just be what it’s like to live in Alaska sometimes. Dark all day!
6) Rolled your eyes at a tourist.
We've all snickered under our breath when encountering a tourist of Alaska. Especially the ones that ask where we all go in the winter when the state shuts down!
7) Seen an eagle dumpster diving.
This is totally a common sight in Alaska. Eagles are like crows and seagulls here! It may be our national bird, but it’s also frequently seen all over Alaska.
8) Enjoyed a cold Alaskan Brew.
That's right, at some point or another you've gulped down a delicious pint of Alaska's finest brew. In fact, our state boasts numerous national award winning beers and breweries, so you know you’re getting the finest beer available when you drink local.
9) Slid into a snowy intersection... by accident!
It's hard to always time those lights right and everyone gets a little distracted sometimes. It's okay to admit we've all slid into a snowy red light intersection at least once during our time in Alaska. I think we all wait a couple seconds after the light turns green at this point!
10) Real ice skating.
If you're a real Alaskan you've gone ice skating on a body of water at least once. None of that sissy skating rink stuff here! Our backcountry skating fans are numerous, and our cities even groom the lakes.
11) Gone sliding down a snowy hill.
No Alaskan can say they haven't slid down a ski hill, whether they are snowboarding or on a sled of some sort, we've all done it. Some we’re sure have even slid down unintentionally, like when walking up a snowy driveway!
12) Worn one of these...
Yep, that's right. All Alaskans have worn a BIG fluffy down jacket, and most women have sported those down skirts too! One of the best ways to stay warm is with down or synthetic down. It keeps us going through the negative temperatures.
13) Enjoyed a Kaladi's Coffee.
Almost ALL Alaskans have enjoyed a delicious cup of Kaladi Brothers Coffee at one point or another. Kaladi Brothers Coffee is pretty much synonymous with Alaska at this point, and we love supporting local Alaskan businesses!
