Being the largest state in the nation, Alaskans basically invented the saying "go big or go home." From the most epic fishing in the world to the most mesmerizing sights to behold on all of the uninhabited landmasses, there are countless things that Alaskans do better than everyone else. One thing is for sure - Alaskans seep at the pores with pride for the 49th state.
1. Seclusion: Alaskans are perfectly fine with utter remoteness. In fact, they prefer it.
Alaska has the lowest population density in the nation at one person per square mile.
2. Fishing: On the salt or in the freshwater, Alaskans have all their bases covered.
A multi-billon dollar industry makes fishing the state’s largest private industry employer.
3. Crabbing: Alaskans are king when it comes to catching crabs.
Maybe you’ve heard of a little TV show called The Deadliest Catch?
4. Log Cabin Living: Because nothing screams “rugged Alaskan” like a cabin in the woods.
Alaska State Parks & Recreation Division offers 66 cabins for public use.
5. Living Off The Land: With a bounty of natural resources, subsistence living is a way of life in Alaska.
From hunting to running trap lines, Alaskans do it all.
6. Unplugging: In a world filled with technology, Alaskans know the importance of being present.
And best of all, Alaskans have a massive playground right out their backdoor.
7. Summer Solstice: I mean, c’mon – Alaska is known for being “the land of the midnight sun.”
No further explanation needed.
8. Back-Country Skiing: “Shred the pow” like no one’s business.
Really though, no one will be watching. Over 94% of the state is uninhabited.
9. Mountains: Of the 20 highest peaks in the United States, 17 are in Alaska.
Including the highest peak in North America (20,320 ft. above sea level), Denali.
10. Christmas: Alaska has the North Pole, Santa’s workshop and tons of live reindeer. Winning!
Fa la la la la, la la la la.
11. Lake Parties: Over 3 million lakes can be found in Alaska. So naturally, we win in this category.
Sorry Minnesota; we got your 10,000 beat. That’s cute though!
12. Coastal Living: Alaska is the only state to have coastlines on three different seas - the Arctic Ocean, Pacific Ocean and Bering Sea.
Plus, Alaska has more coastline than the rest of the US combined. Boom!
13. Eligible Bachelors: Around 52% of Alaskans are men – the highest percentage of any state.
Caution: "the odds are good, but the goods are odd."
14. Bonfires: An Alaskan staple to every weekend, all year long.
Minimum 10ft height required. Go big or go home. No really, you will be asked to leave.
15. Resourcefulness: When you have to fly to the grocery store or drive 300 miles to the nearest gas station, you learn to get creative.
Impromptu photo shoots earn you extra ruggedness points.
Well there you have it; all the roughness and toughness that you need to compete with an Alaskan. How do you measure up? What else do you think Alaskans do better than anyone else?
