Poison hemlock (Conium maculatum) is a highly toxic plant with a deceptively attractive appearance, often mistaken for wild parsley or Queen Anne's lace. All parts of the plant contain potent alkaloids, which can be deadly if ingested, making it a dangerous plant to handle or encounter in the wild. Poison hemlock, also known as Conium maculatum, is a member of the Apiaceae family of plants and is related to a variety of herbs and crops, including carrots and parsley. With that being said, because this plant is quite poisonous and can be deadly, you'll certainly want to skip it the next time you're cooking a meal.
To many people, poison hemlock is nothing more than just a weed. However, that couldn't be further from the truth. Introduced in the 1800s in Europe, this plant is now located all across the continental United States, including right here in Alabama. In fact, it could be in your very own yard.
Every part of poison hemlock is poisonous, including its stem, leaves, roots, etc. They contain several highly toxic alkaline oils.
Most people who touch these plants end up suffering from skin irritation. For those who touch the plants and rub their eyes, nose, or mouth, more severe reactions are likely to occur. Always remember to wear gloves and safety eyewear whenever you're pulling these plants. They also need to be disposed of quickly because even dead plants are toxic for up to three years.
Many people who've ingested these plants have suffered from muscle paralysis and eventually death due to respiratory failure.
Poison hemlock grows best in shady areas with moist soil. It's also not uncommon to see this poisonous plant in vacant lots, fields, and on roadsides.
If you've been in contact with poison hemlock and suspect poisoning, you'll want to immediately call 911 or the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222. If your pet shows any symptoms of poisoning, be sure to call their veterinarian.
