Los Angeles City Hall may seem a normal size by today’s downtown standards, but when it was originally completed, it was considered extra impressive! In fact, it was the tallest building in the city for a long time. The history behind its amazing height is an interesting one. From the 20s through the 60s, Los Angeles City Hall held the title of the tallest building in the city. Come along as we give you all the insider deets!
The City Hall building was completed in 1928. At 452 feet tall, it was an amazing feat.
It was designed by Allied Architects, an impressive group of accomplished architects whose artistic decisions influenced the design of the whole downtown area.
At the time, there was a law in place to ensure that no other buildings were allowed to be built taller than one third the height of City Hall.
This ordinance was followed to the letter. In fact, no building was taller until 1968, making City Hall the tallest building in Los Angeles for 40 years.
The architectural style incorporates many different design elements for a unique structure. The architects drew from art deco, Byzantine, Spanish, and Corinthian styles, to name only a few.
The building stands out from its surrounding area through its one-of-a-kind style as well as its height. Today, it stands proud and is surrounded by lovely landscaping that brings plenty of cheer to the bustling neighborhood.
