Secluded on a hilltop on the California coast, the Hearst Castle remains a true work of art. The estate was constructed by William Randolph Hearst, a successful newspaper and media publisher, between 1919 and 1947. During the roaring twenties, the castle served as a social place for some of Hollywood’s most prominent stars. Today, you can tour the famous castle -- widely considered one of the best castles in the US -- and it's something like out of a fairytale.
Hearst originally named his estate the “La Cuesta Encanta,” which means “The Enchanted Hill.” The property has four lavish buildings and two massive swimming pools - one indoor and one outdoor.
Casa Granda, the largest structure on the property is 68,500 square feet. It has a total of 115 rooms, including the Theater, Library, Billiard Room, and Beauty Salon.
Inside, there’s a dining room fit for a feast where Hearst often held gatherings with his guests. He named this room the Refectory because it resembles a monastery’s dining hall.
The Guest Houses have a total of 46 rooms. On the guided tour, you can view one of the many guest rooms where Hollywood stars spent the night during lavish parties on the property.
There are over 127 acres of beautiful gardens on the estate. The views are simply breathtaking and overlook the ocean, accented by palms, shrubs, and vines.
The Neptune Pool holds 345,000 gallons of water. Like the rest of the property, it resembles something you'd find in Europe.
Hearst Castle remains a National Historic Landmark today and a magnificent piece of architecture and history. Using inspiration from Europe, Hearst created a legacy that visitors from all over can enjoy in the present day.
