As winter settles in across the state, we have to admit that we're not looking forward to shivering in the bitter cold and spending the morning shoveling our driveways. But every time we think we'll just pack up and move to Hawaii, we realize that there are many things we'd miss about winter in South Dakota.
1. The snowy landscape.
Whether you're enjoying the prairie or the mountains, snow turns South Dakota into a winter wonderland.
2. Ice fishing as the sun rises.
There's nothing like catching the perfect sunrise while you're huddled in a shelter on an icy lake, waiting to catch a fish.
3. Our little towns look so cozy in the winter.
When the homes and businesses are all lit from inside, everything looks cozy and warm.
4. Ice skating at Main Street Square.
We can't imagine a winter without at least one trip to Rapid City to skate under the stars.
5. Snowmobiling across South Dakota.
Sure, you can go snowmobiling in other places. But riding in South Dakota is an experience you can't have elsewhere. You'll find well over 1,000 miles of trails here, from the prairie to the Black Hills.
6. Pheasant hunting from October to January.
In South Dakota, some towns celebrate the hunt like nowhere else. How could we miss the community spirit that surrounds the pheasant hunt?
7. Tubing at Great Bear Ski Valley.
There's nothing like flying down the hills on a tube.
8. Diving into a heaping serving of hotdish.
Winter in South Dakota means cold air and comfort food.
9. Solitude in the tourist spots.
After the tourists leave, South Dakotans enjoy the solitude at the state and national parks during the winter.
