We all know that Spearfish Canyon in South Dakota is stunning in the fall, but have you experienced all four seasons of this glorious area? This South Dakota gorge will leave you absolutely breathless even during the winter months. From icy blue waters to stunning frozen waterfalls, this natural wonder will drop your jaw this winter.

As one of the oldest canyons in the country, Spearfish Canyon is an astonishingly beautiful South Dakota treasure. This canyon stretches for nearly 20 miles in the majestic northern Black Hills.
Visitors who drive along the 22-mile Spearfish Canyon Scenic Byway this winter can gaze at the ginormous limestone palisades from the comfort of their warm vehicles. You'll also see the stunning frozen waterfalls along the way, including Bridal Veil Falls, which can be seen from the highway.
Begin the scenic drive at Exit 10 or Exit 14 off Interstate 90, which will connect to the mouth of the canyon at the Spearfish Canyon Country Club. And while you're driving along the Spearfish Canyon in winter, watch out for the occasional goat jam. They are everywhere!
Utilizing ice axes and all the necessary tools needed for a safe ascend, skilled climbers scale their way up the dazzling icy waterfalls and 80-foot canyon walls. Another great reason to spend a winter in South Dakota. Those who are a little less confident or experienced in climbing can have a blast exploring the snowshoeing trails, such as Iron Creek Trail.
Accessible from Highway 14A, it is one of the most popular trails to explore in the winter. You can rent snowshoes from the sports center at Spearfish Canyon Lodge.
Eleventh Hour Gulch is one of the lovely nooks located in Spearfish Canyon near the 20-mile marker, right across from the “kissing stones.” One of the best places to go during the winter in South Dakota, it’s accessible right off of the scenic drive (Highway 14A). Surrounded by snow-covered rocks and ice displays, it’s a peaceful place to stop and enjoy the incredible view of the area that’s just loaded with natural splendor and beauty.
Though many tourists and locals alike explore the canyon’s glorious waterfalls and trails during the warmer months (don’t even get us started on how stunning this area is during the fall), it’s a lovely place to explore year-round. The sparkly, fresh snow blankets the canyon to make for a truly picturesque scene. Talk about serene!

Why We Love It: It's taken several trips for me to figure out my perfect "weekender bag that's TSA approved," but I've found my perfect carry on with the TOBIQ Colorado 30L.
