It's the most wonderful time of the year! No, it isn't the holiday season (yet), but rather time for the Farmers' Almanac winter predictions, which this year come bearing bad news for the Mount Rushmore State. If you thought that 2020 couldn't get any more unpleasant, think again, as the famous Farmers' Almanac is calling for a downright cold and snowy 2020 South Dakota winter:
Dubbed the "Winter of the Great Divide," the Farmers' Almanac is predicting that winter 2020-2021 will be "Cold and snowy in the north. Drought in the west. And everything crazy in between! Which side are you on?"
Sadly, the side that SoDak is on is cold, snowy, and miserable, which can be seen via the Farmers' Almanac's Extended Forecast for Winter 2020-2021, which predicts all of the above for the Midwest and Great Lakes, and Northern and Central Plains.
According to the Extended Forecast, "The Great Lakes region will get its fair share of snow but expect above-normal snowfall if you live in the western Dakotas, northern portions of Colorado and Utah, as well as Wyoming, Montana, Idaho, and central and eastern sections of Washington and Oregon."
How accurate is the Farmers' Almanac? In continuous publication since 1818, the Almanac has a whopping 80% accuracy rate, which - sadly - includes centuries worth of correct SoDak weather predictions.
Does the Farmers' Almanac achieve their accurate predictions via recent technology and satellite imagery? Surprisingly, no, as they follow a specific set of rules developed by the Almanac's first editor in 1818 that includes such specifics as sunspot activity, the position of the planets, and the tidal action of the Moon.
