Without a doubt, there is no shortage of places to explore and things to do in the state of South Carolina. Many people naturally find their way to the most traveled of places, including this one. But when it comes to this one touristy spot, not many people know about the fabulous city park that's hiding in plain sight. Check it out below and then make plans to spend a little extra time the next time you're visiting this touristy spot in the Lowcountry.
Most visitors to the Charleston area have at least heard of the famous restaurant row (Shem Creek), located across the bridge in the town of Mount Pleasant.
But what many don't realize is there is a full city park that runs parallel to Shem Creek.
The current park, which is ADA compliant, includes 2,200 feet of roomy boardwalk that doles out dreamy marsh and creek views as you make your way to the end.
On the one side of the boardwalk, you'll find the ever-popular Shem Creek and all the activity generated by the patrons of the waterfront restaurants and businesses. And on the other... peaceful sweeping views with blues and greens brighter than you probably can imagine.
The park comes with a few other bonuses as well. Like the pelican made out of artsy leftovers, a park-exclusive adjacent parking lot — which if you've ever been to Shem Creek you KNOW is important — and restrooms (also important!)
Your visit will also likely include a few visitors who are accustomed to posing for plenty of photographs.
And for sure, a few of those famous shrimp boats will likely be at the docks across the creek, making this park visit an even more authentically Lowcountry-esque experience.
From the end of the boardwalk, at almost the junction of Shem Creek and Charleston Harbor, you'll get an upfront seat for views of Fort Sumter and the famous Cooper River Bridge, known as The Rav. Time it right, and you could also get to photograph a sunset just like this one.
Shem Creek Park is located at Shrimp Boat Ln., Mt. Pleasant, SC 29464. The park is open daily from 5 a.m. to midnight. Admission and parking are free. There are 35 dedicated vehicle spots for guests of the park.
