Formerly known long ago as "Puddin’ Swamp," Turbeville is a tiny town in Clarendon County with less than 1,000 residents. Located between Columbia and Myrtle Beach, it became known in more recent years as a "speed trap" when a civil suit was brought against the town in 2016. The suit alleged that the town safety ordinances allowing traffic tickets to be written with higher fines than state traffic tickets and money from the citations to be kept by the town are illegal and should be repealed. And sitting right along that Highway 378 route is one of the most iconic restaurants in South Carolina, the Turbeville Chat n’ Chew, one of those places where the locals eat.
Sometimes just a good, basic burger is what you crave. Look for the Hawaiian burger on the menu, though, if you want a bit of a different type of burger experience!
The ribeye is a customer favorite, cooked to perfection.
There are daily specials, too, which you’ll find shared each day on The Chat n’ Chew Facebook page, which has more followers than the total number of residents living there! And that would be for several reasons.
People who used to live in Turbeville continue to support the diner. Some guests drive a considerable number of miles to eat here. And before I-95 was built in 1957, the diner was on the main route between New York and Florida. The current owner, Bernard Blackmon, has met people all over the country who know of the Chat n’ Chew.
Customers are also drawn to the diner’s retro-style as it makes for an interesting adventure while traveling. The atmosphere inside is friendly and casual, the service is good, and the prices are very reasonable, further adding to its appeal.

We have to say, it does add to the cozy, winter feeling even if the air isn't exactly nippy. But if you do want a hot drink, there will be multiple options to choose from. Peppermint Spiked Hot Chocolate is a fan favorite! The menu changes every season to keep things fresh and exciting. Every winter dinner you have here will be a little bit different.
