Over the centuries the Palmetto State has been the site of numerous acts of evil. Last year in Charleston, 22-year-old Dylann Roof, a child of the Palmetto State, reminded us that no one or no place is off-limits to the most hideous of crimes.
John D. Long Lake in Union County, South Carolina is such a place. It will forever be remembered as the interim resting place of 3-year-old Michael Daniel Smith and his younger brother, 14-month-old Alexander Tyler Smith.
It was here, on October 25, 1994, that 23-year-old Susan Smith made a decision to end the life of her two precious children by sending them to their death in an underwater tomb.
What followed was an 8-day-long worldwide media frenzy in which Smith first claimed the children had been abducted in a carjacking. By the end of the week her story was changing; and on the 8th day she admitted to the heinous crime of strapping the children into their car seats and rolling her car into John D. Long Lake, drowning her own babies.
Her evil actions earned Smith life in prison with a minimum of 30 years. She will be eligible for parole in 2024.
As for John D Long Lake, in 2013 the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources drained the lake and closed it for two full years due to an overabundance of bass. In this news report an unidentified person being interviewed says the closing was okay with him because, "It's not like I'm going to fish there anyway." This attitude may explain the overpopulation of fish in the first place.
Whatever the reason for the massive bass population, or the 2013 draining and two-year-closing of John D. Long Lake in Union County, this spot in South Carolina bears a constant reminder of the evil that occurred here in 1994.
It's been nearly 22 years since Susan Smith killed her two boys in Union County. How do you feel about John D. Long Lake and/or this crime more than two decades after the fact? Feel free to comment here or on Facebook.
