Sometimes, time spent in nature is meditative. It's a chance to find one's own roots, so to speak, and listen to the majesty of local fauna. No landscape is quite as impressive, however, as a South Carolina waterway. Whether you're exploring our lakes, rivers, streams, or coastline, you will find yourself mesmerized and enchanted by the peacefulness and enduring nature of our water features. One of the prettiest lakes in South Carolina is Lake Greenwood and, believe it or not, it's actually man-made. Check it out:
Welcome to Lake Greenwood, a little slice of paradise shaped by human minds.
This incredible and massive lake was formed by a hydroelectric dam. With 11,400 acres of surface area, this lovely lake spans into three different counties.
This site is famous for hosting the annual South Carolina Festival of Flowers, an incredible celebration of local culture and climate.
There's much to do in the Greenwood area, and this annual event each June attracts the attention of visitors from all around the state. Elaborate floral displays combine effortlessly with the energetic atmosphere of this community.
Lake Greenwood State Park was one of sixteen parks built by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC).
The CCC was a Depression-era public work relief program that offered work to young men struggling to find jobs. To this day, architecture built by the CCC is still standing in the park.
There's much to do in this park, especially if you're a fan of hiking or biking.
Visitors also love to fish at Lake Greenwood. This park participates in the Tackle Loaner Program, so you can visit the park office and loan some gear for yourself.
Visitors also adore the opportunity to swim and picnic at this scenic spot.
There is no lifeguard on duty at the lake, nor is there a designated swimming beach or anything similar. Swim at your own risk and be sure to brush up on the rules.
And if you hike, bike, or swim up an appetite during your visit, you'll be pleased to know that there is excellent dining in the area.
Skippers on Lake Greenwood is a delightful little restaurant that's right on the waterfront. They serve up delicious food, and they also have pontoon and jet ski rentals, a giant jungle float, and more.
Whatever you do at Lake Greenwood, you'll have a great time... just be sure to stay for the sunset!
Speaking of staying late, did you know that you can camp at Lake Greenwood? The state park has 125 paved sites for tents or RVs!
The park closes at 10 p.m. during Daylight Saving Time, so you'll also enjoy scenic beauty if you choose to linger just a bit past sunset.
As night descends upon this pretty landscape, the forest springs to life with nocturnal song.
