South Carolina's newest mountain hiking destination is one with a particularly interesting terrain. It's located within the Nine Times Preserve in the Upstate near Pickens and a hike on the Big Rock Mountain Trail is one you won't soon forget.
The trail to the summit of South Carolina's Big Rock Mountain is 2.2 miles out and back and has an overall elevation change of just 695 feet.
Hike from below up to the summit at 1,801 feet above sea level to gain a wonderful perspective from high above the surrounding terrain. But that's not all you'll be gawking at...
You'll be happy to hear that Big Rock Mountain was named appropriately. Sure, the summit has a few piles of small boulders...
But it also has quite literally TONS of enormous loose boulders strewn all over the top and the sides of the mountain.
It's like a great big rock pile made by a giant who picked them up, one by one, and cast them about on this mountain.
As you can imagine, hiking to the top is filled with adventure, both from the fun of walking amongst so many huge boulders as well as for the long-range peek-a-boo views as you make your way to the summit.
Boulder after boulder will jump out in front our your field of vision, making it nearly impossible to not stop and take a zillion photos - of rocks!
