Motels had their heyday over half a century ago when long-distance road trips became increasingly popular. Today, most of the surviving motels are a bit underwhelming, with faded fabrics and tired amenities. However, there's one motel in Charleston that has absolutely embraced the motel aesthetic, offering state-of-the-art accommodations with a fun, retro twist.
For over sixty years, the Starlight Motor Inn has been a fixture in its North Charleston neighborhood. It gained a reputation for being an affordable and easy-to-access place to stay, also unique for being the first modular motel in the South. The family-run inn weathered it all: hurricanes, competition from corporate hotel chains, and even the closing of the nearby naval base. By 2020, the Starlight Motor Inn had been added to the National Register of Historic Places, and just a couple of years later, the property was thoughtfully renovated and restored. Today, you'll find a 51-room property owned and operated by a proud Charleston local.
The rooms themselves are stunning. Those with an eye for mid-century modern style will find an aesthetic treasure trove of polished brass furnishings, warm colors, stylized furnishings, and bits of history that have been carefully preserved, such as newspaper clippings and other memorabilia. Even the bathrooms are beautiful!
During the day, take advantage of the on-site pool, particularly if you visit in the summer. It's nothing short of an oasis, complete with lounge chairs and towels. It's kid-friendly, plus, there's a pool room loaded with fun games for everyone. When evening arrives, head on over to the Burgundy Lounge, which has been in operation since 1966. It's the best place in town for some old-school classic drinks and nightly entertainment.

Why We Love It: It's taken several trips for me to figure out my perfect "weekender bag that's TSA approved," but I've found my perfect carry on with the TOBIQ Colorado 30L.
