Johns Island is the largest island in the state and fourth largest on the East Coast, best known as home to the world-famous Angel Oak tree, called the most beautiful place in South Carolina by Condé Nast Traveler. It’s now also where you’ll find the best beer in South Carolina – at a spot called Low Tide Brewing.
The Dream
Born out of a dream that began while one of its owners, Mike, was in college, Low Tide Brewing first opened its doors in March of 2016. This was the first of four steps of its simple brewing process.
You know it's a great place when you've got a leader who knows how to have a good time, even with his clothing!
The Ingredients
Step two involves the selection of local ingredients when possible by Low Tide Brewing.
The Brewing
The most complicated part of the brewing process is, well, the brewing. And this is step three, where the magic happens as science and a vigilant expert eye come together with the ingredients to brew what has become the top beer in the state.
The Drinking
And the fourth and final step is the end result when you get to join with family and friends to enjoy the fruits of the first three steps. It's the most fun part!
This is also where it's been determined that Low Tide Brewing is the place to enjoy the best beer in South Carolina, as fans began raving on Yelp about the brewery and giving it high ratings.
The Drinks
At Low Tide Brewing, you'll find some unique and interesting drinks, including the Sour Watermelon Seltzer, debuted in March of 2023. It's an off dry, tart seltzer that will remind you of your favorite Sour Patch Kids watermelon gummies.
During summer months, slushes are a refreshing choice. Pictured here are Margarita Beer Slushes that were served only for Cinco de Mayo.
Carolina Creamsicle is the best of the best, a customer favorite. It's brewed with oats, lactose, character malts, and a splash of naturally derived Creamsicle extract. This drink packs a sweet-yet-sour punch with that familiar cream popsicle flavor.
Sometimes Gatorade Quencher Hard Seltzers are available. The four flavors shown in the flight pictured here are Orange Quencher, Blue Quencher, OG Quencher, and Fruit Punch Quencher. A flight is the best way to try different styles or flavors if you're not sure exactly what you want, would like to try something new, or just prefer a little variety.
How about a dessert type drink? This one combines lemons, blueberries, vanilla lactose, and soft serve ice cream powder – reminiscent of rainbow sherbet.
In early June 2023, the “Interstellar Current” NEIPA became available in the taproom. It's a classic juicy, hazy IPA loaded with Galaxy Hops and soft sweet oats with notes of peach rings and ripe stone fruits with a lower bitterness and ABV.
This is just a sampling of what may be available at any given time on tap.
The Atmosphere
Along with really great beer, you'll find a nice casual atmosphere with seating both indoors and outdoors. It's family and dog-friendly.
There are often fun activities to participate in, such as bingo or a cornhole competition.
Sometimes there are food trucks on-site as well.
