According to Condé Nast Traveler, the most beautiful place in South Carolina is found on Johns Island. If you haven't made it a point to visit the famous Angel Oak tree at Angel Oak Park, then perhaps you should. It's among the most incredible natural attractions in South Carolina.
The best estimates of experts place the tree's age between 300 and 500 years.
Anyone who's ever braved the elements of a tropical storm (or those of a hurricane) will tell you that to survive the elements of Mother Nature this close to the ocean for this long is nothing short of a miracle.
Pop over to Johns Island the next time you're in the Lowcountry and pay a visit to Angel Oak Park.
It's often very busy but folks are respectful and generally take turns giving each other a wide berth for photos taken in front of the tree's enormous trunk.
At last measurement, the trunk's circumference was 25.5 feet!
How many people would it take to latch arms and completely encircle that trunk?
The longest limb on the tree (at last measurement) was more than half a football field long: 187 feet!
The limbs alone are the size of normal tree trunks and they sprawl all over the park, dipping below the surface and rising once again a few feet away.
At last report, the shade from the Angel Oak on a sunny day covered an impressive 17,000 feet.
(If you're doing that math, that's almost a third of a football field... )
Angel Oak Park is a wonderful place to spend an hour or so before moving on to other fun things to do in the area.
The park is currently closed on Wednesdays. It's free and open to the public during regular business hours. Donations are accepted.
Angel Oak is part of the City of Charleston's wonderful inventory of parks.
