Did you know South Carolina is home to the largest virgin stand of cypress-tupelo trees in the world? This means, of course, that it's never been logged. You might be surprised to learn we're not talking here about Congaree National Park, which boasts the largest stand of old-growth bottomland hardwoods in the country. Instead, we're talking about the Francis Biedler Forest - and more specifically, the Audubon Center at Biedler Forest in Harleyville. Come along with us as we discover a little known, yet spectacular, ancient forest in South Carolina.
Biedler Forest is found in the middle of Four Holes Swamp.
It's worthy to note that Four Holes Swamp is actually a river, but not an ordinary river. It's more like a braided tangled web of channels that mix, start, stop, and flow into one another for 62 miles through South Carolina. And in its midst is the 18,000-acre Biedler Forest filled with ancient trees, including some of the oldest cypress and tupelo trees in the world estimated at between 1,000 and 1,500 years old.

Altogether, the forest is literally the largest virgin cypress-tupelo forest in the world — and it's right here in the Palmetto State.
For a small entrance fee, you'll get to wander the trails, check out the visitor center (gift shop, educational displays, and more), and explore the forest.
We've often pointed out how undiscovered the "other" virgin forest in South Carolina is (that'd be Congaree National Park), but Biedler Forest is even more of a hidden secret.
Come explore it on foot. It's easy to lose yourself for at least a couple of hours wandering along the boardwalk, which may be the longest one in the state. It's 1.75 miles long!

Why We Love It: It's taken several trips for me to figure out my perfect "weekender bag that's TSA approved," but I've found my perfect carry on with the TOBIQ Colorado 30L. Founded in 1991, the Center for Birds of Prey in Awendaw, SC, located a few miles northeast of Charleston, offers visitors a unique insight into the lives of almost 50 species of birds of prey including eagles, hawks, owls, falcons, kites, and vultures – one of the largest, most diverse collections of its kind in the United States. Situated on over 150 acres, this fun attraction is only open on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays with a variety of programs providing both an educational and entertaining experience. Guests often cite flight demonstrations as the highlight of the visit. This hidden gem in South Carolina is worthy of a day trip, and it's sure to leave a lasting impression.
During a flight demonstration, you get to see different types of birds such as eagles, hawks, and kites showcase their individual flying and hunting techniques while flying untethered!
Information about each type of bird will be explained during the demonstration, as well as the center's overall mission. You'll leave with a greater awareness of how humans are impacting the lives and environment of these types of birds, too.
The clinic is open 365 days a year, admitting anywhere from 800 to 1,000 patients to treat annually, with multiple calls daily about injured birds needing help!
All of the work done at the Center for Birds of Prey would not be possible without the volunteer staff of around 300 who faithfully give their time and expertise. Those interested in volunteering must be at least 18 years old for the medical clinic and 16 years old for all other departments. Seasonal internships and service-learning opportunities may be arranged for students under the age of 16.
