Rhode Island tends to be one of those states that goes overlooked. While this can certainly be blamed on its size, there are many factors that make it a state to be noticed. The elaborate history, beautiful scenery, and unique character of its residents are all examples. There have also been a few memorably odd happenings that are worth mentioning!
1. The Big Blue Bug drinking an Awful Awful over I-95.
Nibbles Woodaway is always so fly.
2. Rhode Island became the first state with an official state drink in 1993.
It comes as no surprise that the beverage named was coffee milk.
3. Rhode Island was home to the first set of sideburns!
Former Governor Ambrose Burnside set this trend in motion in the 1800s.
4. The first accidental nuclear explosion happened in Little Rhody!
A uranium recovery worker accidentally spilled a bad combination of radioactive material and caused the explosion in Wood River Junction in 1964.
5. The first ever yoga pants parade happened in Rhode Island in 2016.
The parade was in response to a letter to the editor calling for an end to women's yoga pants.
6. Little Rhody holds the title of biggest pumpkin on record.
The smallest state win's this national title just about every year.
7. A mysterious small explosion happened at a beach in Rhode Island in 2015 during peak beach hours.
The incident caused harm to one beach goer who was thrown 10 feet from the blast. Though no cause has been confirmed, officials say it was caused by a build up of hydrogen gas and a corroded copper wire.
8. The rise of Pauly D
Rhode Islanders greet the fame of Jersey Shore cast member and Rhode Island local with mostly confusion matched with a love/hate attitude.
9. Years before the Boston Tea Party, the people of Rhode Island lit a British war ship on fire in protest.
Don't mess with the Ocean State. The event known as the Gaspee Affair is still celebrated annually in the state.
10. One of the world's most infamous vampires hails from Rhode Island.
The grave of Mercy Brown, alleged vampire from the late 1800s is still a popular tourist attraction.
