The end of summer is a sore subject in Rhode Island, and this one has seemed especially short (but don't they all?). That being said, even the most diehard summer lovers can admit that autumn in New England is truly something special, particularly in the Ocean State. And while you'll find plenty of places in the area to take in the beauty of the fall foliage, we highly recommend heading to Shannock Falls before winter.
The Shannock Historic District is a historic mill village that sits nestled along the Pawcatuck River in the town of Richmond.
It was once the site of a battle between the Pequot Indians and the Narragansett Indians over fishing rights. More recently, Lawson M. Cary, Jr. was honored for his efforts to protect the native fisheries and wildlife in the area. The fish ladder you'll see here is dedicated to him.

Why We Love It: It's taken several trips for me to figure out my perfect "weekender bag that's TSA approved," but I've found my perfect carry on with the TOBIQ Colorado 30L. We might not have as many waterfalls in Rhode Island as some states, but those we do have are simply breathtaking. Stepstone Falls might be the most well-known of them all, a bucket list-worthy natural wonder that draws outdoor lovers to experience its beauty. This must-visit cascade is reachable along several paths, including the North South Trail Exeter to Carbuncle Pond, one of the best waterfall hikes in Rhode Island.

Earmark at least 4.5 hours for your journey along the 13.4-mile North South Exeter to Carbuncle Pond Trail, which winds through Arcadia Management Area.
Don't stop with this waterfall hike, though. Arcadia Management Area spans more than 14,000 acres and has more than a dozen trails.
The pretty path is not without its challenges, including rocky terrain and roots jutting out of the ground, snagging it a moderately challenging rating. If you're up for the challenges, though, you'll pass some of Rhode Island's most awe-inspiring natural beauty.
While Stepstone Falls is undoubtedly the highlight of the trail, it also boasts plenty of other natural beauty. Sit and soak up the fresh air when you arrive at Carbuncle Pond.
Keep an eye out for unique rock formations on this pretty path that's dog-friendly (just make sure your pup is leashed) and appeals to mountain bikers as well as hikers.
