Spending time in nature inevitably means endless new experiences. We might explore a hiking trail countless times, only to discover something new on each journey. Even if you've been to this nature park in Charlestown, Rhode Island, you'll likely find yourself planning to return again and again to reconnect with nature, follow a scenic hiking trail, or kayak on the Pawcatuck River.
Francis C. Carter Memorial Preserve is known for a few things - from holding the title of the second largest nature preserve in Rhode Island to sweeping landscapes created by glaciers.
It may be best known, however, for having some of the best hiking trails in Rhode Island. Seven hiking trails meander through the lush 1,100-acre nature park.
The nature reserve features such landscapes as meadows, grasslands, and forests.
At just half a mile, the Split Rock Loop Trail, the shortest of the trails, wanders through grasslands and offers a quick and easy introduction to the nature park in Rhode Island.
At three miles, the Ellison "Tarzan" Brown Loop Trail is the longest of the trails at Carter Preserve. You'll pass a variety of scenery, from grasslands and glacial erratics to a stone chimney.
For a unique view of the landscapes, and unique rock formations, explore the Grassland Trail or the Narragansett Trail on horseback.
The sprawling nature preserve is also a prime destination for birdwatching. Keep an eye out for prairie warblers, grasshopper sparrows, and blue-winged warblers.
Nesting birds should be left alone. In some cases, areas where birds are nesting may be closed off to protect them.
You'll likely cross paths with a variety of wildlife, too. Beavers, coyotes, foxes, and white-tailed deer all call the nature preserve home. As you pass the wetlands, you may even spot frogs and dragonflies.
A few things to keep in mind before heading over. If you're bringing your pup, he must remain on a leash at all times.
Bowhunting season (deer) runs, in some areas of the nature preserve, from Sept. 15 through Jan. 31 annually. Make sure you wear florescent orange, either a hat or a vest if you plan to visit during hunting season.
