It's probably safe to say that most Rhode Islanders are familiar with its 14 state parks. However, there are plenty of other neighborhood parks that might not be as well-known, except to locals. Discover a gem when you spend a few hours - or a day - at Salter Memorial Grove Park, a beautiful Rhode Island park.
If you live in the Warwick area, you undoubtedly know and probably have been, maybe even multiple times, to Salter Memorial Grove Park.
Snuggled along the Providence River, the cozy state park tallies just 12 acres but offers plenty to do for nature lovers.
The best way to explore this snug Rhode Island park is on one of its five hiking trails. Pick up the Marsh Trail, for example, near the parking lot, and follow it along the shore.
Prepare for what's been called a "squishy" walk by wearing shoes you don't mind getting wet.
While you'll definitely want your smartphone to snap photos, you can also use it to learn more about the defining features of the park.
As you explore, you'll run across observation stations, each of which is denoted by a metal sign with a QR code. Scan the QR code with your phone to learn more about each feature.
There are 26 observation stations marked A through Z.
Salter Memorial Grove Park is a natural gem, home to more than 291 types of plants and 152 bird species. Mute swans, Canadian geese, and bald eagles are among the birds you might spot.
When you're not exploring, sit down and take a breather while the kids play on the playground.
Or have a relaxing picnic at one of the tables.
It's a wonderfully laid-back way to spend a day in nature.
