Grocery shopping is, for many of us, a mundane chore that we just have to do. We each likely have our own shopping routine, from when we’re going to shop to the fastest way to make it through the store. We’d probably also agree that most grocery stories tend to look alike, right? Well, when you pass this grocery store in Pennsylvania, you’ll notice right away that it’s oozing character and boasts a pretty fascinating history. (Even if you don’t need any groceries, take the time to stop. You’ll see why in a minute.)
Long before the Trader Joe’s in Media opened, the building in which it sits housed the Media Armory, a historic armory that opened in 1908. Originally home to the Cooper Rifles, a unit of the military that dates back to the late 1800s, the armory…
...served the Pennsylvania National Guard’s Company H. Soldiers from that unit would go on to fight in World War I in 1917. In ensuing years, soldiers of Company M would leave the armory on their way to the South Pacific during World War II.
Today, however, the historic building serves two purposes. On the top floor sits a Trader Joe’s, a popular grocery store that sells food and other products from here at home and from around the world.
Once you’ve done your grocery shopping, head to the first floor of the former armory, which now houses the Pennsylvania Veterans Museum.
The free museum provides visitors with insight into World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. Tour the museum and learn more through exhibits that feature artifacts.
You can also watch film footage. The Pennsylvania Veterans Museum is open Thursday through Sunday from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m.
