Primanti Brothers in Pittsburgh got off to a modest start, serving its now-famous sandwiches to hungry truckers from a food cart in 1933.
Back in those early days, Joe Primanti, the founder of the iconic Pennsylvania restaurant, added a helping of fries to his sandwiches. That way, he reasoned, truckers would have a full meal that they could eat with one hand while steering with the other.
The concept took off, becoming something of a cultural phenomenon, and before long, coleslaw was added to the mix. Today, only one place comes to mind when you think of fries and coleslaw on sandwiches.
From a single food cart, Primanti Brothers has grown to include locations throughout Pennsylvania and into several other states, including West Virginia and Maryland.
