With its many bridges, tunnels, and what seems like constant construction work, Pittsburgh can truly be a Pittsburgher's nightmare when it comes to driving, especially at rush hour. Unless you opt for public transportation, you'll want to avoid these six streets in Pittsburgh during rush hour.
1. Route 28
Anyone who regularly drives Route 28 will likely agree that the road is a nightmare during rush hour and just about every other time of the day with drivers weaving in and out of lanes, speeding, and causing unsafe situations. An accident on Route 28, which is common, can back up the road for hours, costing Pittsburgh countless lost hours in work time.
2. Parkway East
The Parkway East turns into a nightmare during the morning and evening rush. If you're coming into Pittsburgh from the east suburbs, you'll inevitably have to sit in front of the Squirrel Hill Tunnel. And, if you're heading to the suburbs, you'll reach the frustrating bottleneck at the Squirrel Hill exit.
3. Parkway West
Expect long commute times when you travel on the Parkway West during rush hour. Accidents along the parkway, heading toward the Fort Pitt Tunnel, can add even more time to an already stressful drive.
4. Liberty Tunnels
Traffic can bottleneck at the Liberty Tunnels, especially during rush hour. Accidents leading to the tunnel - and inside of the tunnel - often add to the snarling of traffic.
5. McKnight Road
Whether McKnight Road deserves to be on this list really depends upon to who you talk. Some believe it is one of the easiest and less stressful roads to drive, especially during peak travel times, while others complain about always hitting the red lights, adding extra time and frustration to their commute.
6. Forbes Avenue
Drivers will often find traffic on Forbes Avenue, especially at rush hour, at a standstill or, at the very least, bumper to bumper and crawling. Add one way streets in Oakland into the mix and you're on one of the worst roads in Pittsburgh during rush hour.
Pittsburgh during rush hour can be a complete nightmare. Avoid the rush hour traffic by dining at one of these charming restaurants in Pittsburgh and waiting until the traffic dies down.
