History whispers all around us in Pittsburgh. In fact, we probably drive or stroll past historical sites every day without even realizing it. And, you've likely driven by the church on the hill, in Churchill, as you traveled on the parkway. Did you know that this historic church in Pittsburgh is also one of the city's oldest, with a story that started back in the mid-1700s?
Beulah Presbyterian Church's story began in 1758, with the first worship service led by Charles Beatty, a British Army Chaplain.
Recognize the name Beatty? If you ever travel in or through Monroeville, you've likely driven on Beatty Road, named after the Army Chaplain.
But, the Presbyterian church didn't recognize the church until 1784. Originally known as Pitt Township Presbyterian Church, the church on the hill earned its current moniker, Beulah, in 1804.
Still, many assert that Beulah Presbyterian Church holds the distinction as one of the "first Christian churches west of the Alleghenies. "
Parishioners originally worshiped in one of two log cabins, which no longer exist, before the historic brick church was built in 1837.
A historic cemetery that dates back to the Revolutionary War era holds the remains of veterans of the Civil War and both World Wars.
Today, parishioners worship at its self-described "multi-purposed building," but visitors can still visit the historic chapel and cemetery.
In fact, the parish celebrated its 230th anniversary in 2014.
