We're never too far from absolutely gorgeous views, no matter where we live in Pennsylvania. However, some of the best views require a bit of work on our part. Embark on a meandering path, for example, that leads to a Pennsylvania overlook and jaw-dropping views. This is one hike on which you'll definitely want to bring your camera.
Bring the whole family, including your leashed pups, on the easy 1.2-mile Stone Mountain Overlook Trial in Rothrock State Forest.
A 16-mile portion of the 84-mile Standing Stone Trail runs through Rothrock State Forest, too. That award-winning trail includes the Thousand Steps Trail that features a climb of 1,000 stairs and incredible views from Jacks Mountain.
Hikers rave about the many vistas along the path and the fact that the trail is kid and pet-friendly.
You'll definitely want to make sure everyone's wearing sturdy, comfortable shoes as the path can get rocky at times. However, in a few cases, a walk on the rocks means...
...sensational views of the surrounding landscape. The trail features two named vistas - Sausser's Pile and Hawk Watch, the latter of which is perfect for watching birds of prey circling overhead.
Be prepared to climb a series of rock stairs that leads to one of the scenic overlooks.
Keep an eye out for loose stones as you make your way to the top.
But when you make it get ready for breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape.
Don't rush once you reach the platform. It's perfect for admiring the views of the landscape and the birds of prey, including raptors.
Stone Mountain Overlook Trail is one of those trails that have to be seen in each season. Just keep an eye out for rattlesnakes along the path in the warmer months.
