Tucked in the Brandywine Valley, the charming small town of Kennett Square, home to just under 6,000 residents, is perhaps best known as the Mushroom Capital of the World.
The area now known as Kennett Square started as the home of members of the Lenape Tribe. Later, during the American Revolution, the British camped in the area.
Added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1999, Kennett Square draws visitors for a variety of reasons, including as the home of Pennsylvania’s most recognizable gardens.
A popular destination year-round, Longwood Gardens spans approximately 200 acres. A stroll through the area will take you along a meandering path past meadows, gardens, and fountains.
For an absolutely enchanting experience, visit Longwood Gardens during the holiday season. A Longwood Christmas runs from mid-November through early January each year.
Kennett Square is known for producing an estimated 60 percent of the mushrooms in the United States to the tune of a half million mushrooms each year.
The family-friendly festival features a full menu of fun, including activities for kids, a chopped mushroom contest, a mushroom picking contest, and a mushroom eating contest.
While you’re in town, explore the many shops and restaurants. You’ll find a little bit of everything – American, Italian, Thai, and Mexican – at the eclectic collection of restaurants.
