"The forest is calling and I must go." Do like John Muir, and heed Mother Nature's call.
In Oregon, there's perhaps no better place to escape the hustle and bustle of modern life than Breitenbush Hot Springs.
This hot springs retreat is located near Detroit, Oregon, on 154 acres of rugged, resplendent land. The lodge at Breitenbush Hot Springs was part of a hot springs resort built in the late 1920s and early 1930s, when using the hot mineral water was considered an important way for people to heal from various ailments and maladies.
Today, this worker-owned cooperative remains committed to the service of its guests, each other, and the land. To this end, Breitenbush is fully off-the-grid; the Powerhouse (shown here) houses the turbine that is spun by the river to create the energy for the resort.
Breitenbush generates all their own electricity from the river and uses geothermal wells to meet its heating needs. The hot springs and wells provide the mineral water for the tubs and steam saunas, too.
But don't mistake "off-the-grid" for anything less than pure rustic luxury. In addition to daytime soaks, guests can book a personal retreat at Breitenbush.
Off-the-grid accommodations include primitive camping, a platform tent, personal yurt, and lodge rooms -- but we recommend going with a glamping cabin in The Aviary.

These canvas tent-cabins each have a full-size bed, nightstand, cafe table and chairs, plus a table on the covered porch. The best part? You'll be a quick jaunt away from the retreat's myriad hot pools and soaking tubs.

...complete with warm, soothing geothermal hot springs! And while you can enjoy the restorative benefits of a hot springs soak all year long, winter soaking at Breitenbush Hot Springs is full of calm, quiet, and magical beauty.
