Cannon Beach is undeniably one of the most beautiful spots on the Oregon coast, and the annual Sandcastle Contest is an event that people look forward to all year long. This year's contest is coming soon, and the accommodations in Cannon Beach fill up fast, so you'll want to start making plans now if you want to attend.
Cannon Beach has been named one of the most beautiful places in America, and we couldn't agree more. This iconic Oregon coast spot draws Oregonians and tourists alike year-round...
...but every June the beach gets a little more crowded as people flock to see the latest creations at the annual Sandcastle Contest. This year marks the 55th year of the contest, which will be held Saturday, June 8th.
These aren't your ordinary sandcastles made with a pail and shovel...these creations are true works of art.
Everyone from families and amateurs to master sandcastle builders participate, and the masters division is serious stuff. These folks spend months planning their designs, and use equipment like concrete forms, ladders, and scaffolding to build intricate designs and compete for prize money.
The contest begins at 12:30 p.m., when teams start to create their masterpieces. Watch them as they start from just a pile of sand...
...to a fully-formed sand sculpture.
Judges will come by to take a peek and make their final decisions by 5:30 p.m.. See the winners at the award ceremony before the sandcastles disappear in the high tide.
The Bruce Thomas Smith Band will play at 7 p.m., followed by bonfires and s'mores on the beach from 8:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m..
From magical dragons to sky-high sandcastles, this is one event you won't want to miss! Cannon Beach fills up quickly on this weekend, so make your reservations soon.
