If you love to hike, you don't even have to leave the city to find some of the best hiking around. Sure, the Gorge, the coast and Mt Hood all have exceptional hiking as well, but these 11 hikes are right in our own backyard and so worth the effort. Whether you want a day hike or a quick afternoon stroll, these are some of the best options for hiking in Portland, and you will love each and every one of them.
1. Hoyt Arboretum
This lovely arboretum in Washington Park features a 4.7 mile loop that is picturesque all year long.
2. Mt Tabor
With three trails to choose from, Mt Tabor is a scenic wonderland with something for everyone.
3. Oaks Bottom Wildlife Refuge
This 2.3-mile hike loops around the wetland and provides some great looks at birds and other local wildlife.
4. Smith and Bybee Lakes
Another great wetland area in Portland, this paved trail is 2.1 miles and gives you a great opportunity to see turtles, eagles and more.
5. Wapato Greenway
Out at Sauvie Island, this 2.2-mile hike is a great place to see beavers and waterfowl.
6. Washington Park
Dirt and paved trails surround this expansive park that is home to many attractions. The 3.9-mile trail around the park is an easy, yet lovely walk.
7. Council Crest
One of the most grueling hikes in the city leads you to one of the most scenic views. At just 3.3 miles, the hike is not terribly long, but with a great elevation change it is a moderate workout that pays off.
8. Marquam Nature Park
This quaint forested park is offers wonderful hiking in its loop trail that clocks in at 3.8 miles.
9. Powell Butte
Grassy meadows abound on this lovely hike at another of Portland's extinct volcanos. The 4.3-mile trail that surrounds the park offers some great views of Mt. Hood.
10. Pittock Mansion Hike
Stroll the famed Wildwood Trail to the historic Pittock Mansion for some of the best city views around. This 5-mile jaunt is a moderate hike, but worth the effort for the stunning vantage point.
11. Warrior Rock
This 7-mile hike on beach and trails of Sauvie Island is a lovely way to spend a day. End up at the Warrior Rock Lighthouse and enjoy the spectacular views from the only lighthouse not on the coast in Oregon.
