Oregon is beautiful. Anyone who's visited or is lucky enough to be a resident of this Pacific Northwest haven knows this to be true. Any time of year proves to be equally magnificent when it comes to admiring the natural splendor of Oregon's landscape. And while many assume that the east coast has the best fall foliage in the country, one of the best places to admire this season is right here in Oregon. Here's the low-down on how to make the most of this year's fall foliage:
Oregon’s autumn is a brief yet exquisite time of year when the leaves suddenly erupt into their fiery colors. This production can be enjoyed in nearly every corner of the state, although there are some places that will prove particularly memorable. Photographed above is a scene from Marion, Oregon.
For the most variety in color, the McKenzie Pass is not to be missed. Scenic in all seasons, this drive is just breathtaking in the fall. There’s just something so stunning about the deep reds, yellows and oranges against the soft, steady color of the evergreens. Be sure to make the trip starting in mid-October, as the road will close sometime in early November for the season.
Your scenic route could begin in Belknap, where you’ll continue on to Sisters via Highway 242. As you meander through the Willamette Valley, keep your eyes peeled for a canopy of color as well as some traditionally-eastern trees such as the black walnut and Norway maple.
If time allows for it, be sure to take some of the hiking trails along the way. The Dee Wright Observatory is a popular place for incredible scenery, but some of the best colors can be found
at the University of Oregon campus. So grab a cup of coffee, enjoy the drive, and watch as the magic of fall unveils before your eyes.
If you’re venturing out in the morning, be sure to take the Corvallis River Walk, as photographed above, in the Willamette Valley. It’s especially magical with a healthy dose of Oregon fog.
