The Oregon Coast is a place of mysterious intrigue and allure; its waters as bright and beautiful as they are wild and untamable. The most infamous, of course, is the Wreck of the Peter Iredale, a stunning ruin located at Fort Stevens State Park. And while this skeletal ship is definitely a bucket-list must, it's not the only spectacular shipwreck ruin in Oregon. In Gold Beach, the Mary D. Hume is a vessel from 1880 with surprisingly well-preserved artifacts and a truly fascinating story. Built in 1881 by R.D. Hume of Astoria, Oregon, the Mary D. Hume was named after its creator's wife, and the ship was quite the beauty, back in the day.
The Hume was a striking sight to behold; she weighed 150 tons and measured 96 feet long.

The Mary D. Hume had quite the colorful career. She tirelessly hauled cargo up and down the shores of the Pacific Northwest, and even spent several years as a whaling vessel in the Arctic, setting record upon record for the duration and success of her expeditions.
The boat holds the record for largest catch of a baleen whale in the industry, in fact.
Today, the boat still carries the record for longest-serving vessel off the Pacific Coast. However, since 1978, she's been in permanent retirement at Gold Beach.

Why We Love It: It's taken several trips for me to figure out my perfect "weekender bag that's TSA approved," but I've found my perfect carry on with the TOBIQ Colorado 30L. Why I Love It: Fact: Airplanes are notoriously dry, dry, dry. No matter how much water I drink both before and during the flight, I always find myself in a hydration deficit for days. As Oregonians, we are known for our pioneering spirit and rugged independence. Even though our state did not join the union until 1859, it has still managed to lead the nation by example many times over the years. If you've ever wondered what sets the Beaver State apart from the rest of the country in historical terms, we've compiled a list of seven Oregon firsts.

1. Oregon was the first state to vote entirely by mail.
Labor Day falls on the first Monday of September and celebrates American workers. When it comes to things invented in Oregon, this may be one of the lesser-known Oregonian firsts.
3. In 1973, Oregon became the first state to decriminalize marijuana.
The Bottle Bill, championed by Governor Tom McCall, added a five-cent deposit to most bottles and cans. This was done in an attempt to address a growing litter problem along the coastal regions, highways, and other public places.
5. The first-ever seal conceived and born in captivity was born at the Seaside Aquarium in 1952.
However, since Seaside Aquarium did not record its seal birth with the American Association of Zoological Parks and Aquariums, the New York Aquarium holds the record on paper.

6. The first permanent U.S. settlement on the Pacific coast was located in Astoria, Oregon.
This may be one of the lesser-known fun facts about Oregon: The Webfoots, as their basketball team was known back then, beat out Ohio State 46–33 in the final game.
