If you love animals, you know about the pet rescues, sanctuaries, and shelters all over the Beaver State. You can visit and adopt cats, dogs, and other common pets at any of them, but did you know that sometimes farm animals need new homes, too? There's a farm sanctuary here in Silverton that rescues horses, cows, pigs, sheep, goats, and even chickens. Check out Green Acres Farm Sanctuary:
Green Acres Farm Sanctuary opened in 2011, and since that time, it's rescued more than 800 farm animals.
The sanctuary is a 501(c)(3) non-profit that rescues abused, neglected, and unwanted farm animals.
The animals that are brought here are provided with veterinary care, large pastures for grazing and roaming, and plenty of loving attention.
The property encompasses 28 acres and includes several barns, including a gambrel barn built in 1928.
All kinds of animals call this place home, including about 115 chickens.
Some of the chickens were once laying hens who are too old to produce eggs now; others are rescued hens that were penned in tiny cages. They're much happier here at the farm.
You'll find 21 quirky, adorable goats living at the farm right now. They all have unique personalities, and are a blast to hang out with.
The 18 sheep who live here all have tragic stories from their pasts.
Many of the sheep were abandoned by their owners, and left to the coyotes, who picked them off one by one. The surviving sheep from that flock came here. Others were rescued by law enforcement when they were found on a filthy farm, surrounded by animal carcasses.
Other animals at the farm include pigs, horses, donkeys, ducks, geese, and turkeys.
Dogs, cats, kittens, and puppies often come to the farm as well. They're often fostered with families until they can be permanently adopted.
There are many ways you can help out at Green Acres Farm Sanctuary.
Take an educational tour, where you'll meet the animals and learn about the mission of the farm. Tours start up in the spring, so keep an eye on the farm's website and Facebook page.
Participate in a work party, chicken health check, or other event.
