Located near Newport, just below the iconic Yaquina Head, lies the amazing Cobble Beach on Oregon's coast. Like it's name suggests, this picturesque cove is made up thousands of smooth, round cobblestones. This unique natural wonder is an incredible place to spend an afternoon relaxing, birdwatching, exploring tide pools, and more.
This gorgeous beach may be small, but it's a special sight to behold.
The basalt cobblestones are said to be the result of a lava flow dating back roughly 14 million years. The smooth black stones cover the beach, glittering in the rising and falling tide.
The beach is dotted with incredible tide pools that are perfect for exploring and spotting colorful sea anemones, mussels, and starfish.
The huge seastacks just off the shore are actually home to roughly 300,000 seabirds called Common Murres. If you look closely, you can often see birds covering the rocky islands, and when they lift off to soar away, the sight is truly spectacular. It's definitely worth bringing a pair of binoculars!
A short walk up to Yaquina Head will lead you to this incredible viewpoint and historic lighthouse. If you come at the right time, you can sign up for a tour of the lighthouse to see it from the inside.
This incredible hidden gem on the Oregon Coast is definitely worth seeking out.
To get there, take HWY 101 to Newport and then go to Yaquina Head Lighthouse at 750 NW Lighthouse Drive. From Yaquina Head, you'll find an outdoor flight of stairs leading down to Cobble Beach.
