Get ready to gallop into a colorful world of wonder because the Painted Horses of Shawnee are here to steal your heart. These majestic fiberglass horses are located right in the heart of downtown Shawnee, and local artists have individually painted them to create one-of-a-kind masterpieces. Check some of them out below, then schedule a day trip to see them in person!
The Painted Horses project began back in 2002 as a way to showcase the city's wild western heritage and to promote the arts. Fast forward to today, and there are nearly 30 horses on display throughout the city, each with its own unique design and theme.
From patriotic to whimsical, these horses have it all. Some depict scenes from the city's history, like the one honoring the city's indigenous heritage, while others pay homage to local landmarks and events. Standing in front of Arvest Bank on Kickapoo is IndianBlanket with its shades of blue and splashes of red flowers.
The horses are painted in a wide range of colors, from bright and bold to more subdued and natural tones, so there's something for everyone. Here is Synergy, a boldly-patterned stallion that likes to hang around the Town & Country Vet on Brian Street.
Evening Star was created by artist David Phelps and was installed in the city in 2013. The colors on this one are a fan favorite. This horse is a true work of art and can be found in the public park.
But these horses aren't just a feast for the eyes, they also serve an important cultural and educational purpose. Many of the horses have plaques next to them that provide information about the artist and the inspiration behind the design.
The Painted Horses have also become a beloved part of the community. Local residents take pride in the horses and many have even adopted them as their own, taking care of them and keeping them clean. It's a true testament to the community's spirit.
If you're planning a visit to Shawnee make sure you add the Painted Horses to your to-do list. It's an excellent way to explore the city's history, culture, and art. Plus, it's a ton of fun! These horses are a must-see for art lovers and history buffs alike.
