This family-friendly activity is one you don't want to miss in Oklahoma. Load up your buckets and shovels, pack the sunscreen and water, and book a cabin at Salt Plains State Park today.
Great Salt Plains State Park is located 8 miles north of Jet, Oklahoma, and boasts 840-acres of beautiful and unique scenery.
The park is most famous for its crystal digging area. It is the only place in the world where you can dig for hourglass-shaped selenite crystals.
They are open from sunrise to sunset. Bring your own shovels, chairs, buckets, water, and snacks, as there is not much around if you need any supplies.
The crystals are found just a few inches under the surface. The hourglass shapes form inside these crystals because of the way the sand and water combine together, forming the shape.
No permit is required to dig and every visitor is allowed to remove up to 10 lbs. each, plus one big cluster.
A viewing platform is located in the area and provides a great lookout point for the salt plains and for wildlife too.
Extend your digging day trip and stay overnight in one of their cozy cabins or pitch a tent in their campground.
