Tucked away in northwestern Oklahoma is one of the most unusual topographies you'll find in Oklahoma. Little Sahara State Park is home to vast dunes that resemble the Sahara Desert and is perfect for ATV riding. But don't worry, if you want a more laid-back experience, they offer something for everyone. If you've never visited this mini-desert in the Sooner State, we highly recommend you plan a trip and see these extraordinary dunes in person.
Little Sahara State Park, also known as Waynoka Dunes, is located south of Waynoka in northwest Oklahoma. The state of Oklahoma purchased the land in 1960 and expanded it in 1963.
Today, the park is home to 1,600 acres and is open year-round for ATV riding, exploring, and camping.
The sand dunes are rideable and range in height from 25 feet to 75 feet. No permits are required to enter and you are allowed to bring your own off-road vehicle. They also offer rentals in the area.
If you are wanting to bring the RV or pitch a tent, they offer options for both. Campsites can be reserved online (link at the bottom of the article).
Even if you don't want to take an ATV ride, it's a magical place to visit to see the unusual desert topography in person.
There is a beautiful observation deck that you can walk up and see for miles and miles away. It's the perfect spot to enjoy the surrounding scenery without being in the sand.
But, it's hard to beat this setting. After a day out on the dune buggies, set up your chairs and enjoy a stunning sunset while the kids explore in the sand.
