Many people are surprised to discover the diverse topography across Oklahoma. It is only one of four states with more than 10 ecoregions - from Rocky Mountain foothills and swamps to tallgrass prairies and mountains. One of the most unique topographies lies within Little Sahara State Park in Waynoke, Oklahoma. It is not only a favorite spot for ATV riders, but it is a spectacular place to visit to enjoy a desert-like scenery full of sand dunes.
Named for its resemblance to the Sahara Desert, Little Sahara State Park offers 1,600 acres of rideable sand dunes.
The dunes range in height from 25 feet to 75 feet tall.
The extensive dunes have formed over time from terrace deposits, remnants of prehistoric times when the Cimarron River flowed over the entire area.
A viewing platform has been built for sightseers who wish to stay out of the dunes.
You can walk along the path and enjoy the dunes from the distance.
This desert setting in northwestern Oklahoma is stunning.
