Oklahoma has so many wonderful historical landmarks to visit. It would take you weeks to visit them all. If you're looking for a charming small town where you can visit several of them in one day, look no further than Guthrie, Oklahoma. As the first capital of Oklahoma, the town is not only historical but insanely adorable. From Victorian architecture to the Wild West spirit, Guthrie is a beautiful gem in the Sooner State that's worthy of a visit. Check out three historical landmarks below that we highly recommend you visit while in town.
1. Guthrie Historic District: Downtown Guthrie
Guthrie Historic District represents the commercial core of the city. The city of Guthrie was founded in 1889 and promptly became the capital of Oklahoma Territory. When Oklahoma became a state on November 16, 1907, Guthrie became the first state capital, until 1910, when the seat of government moved to Oklahoma City. A portion of the downtown Capitol Townsite Historic District is designated as a National Historic Landmark, signifying the national importance of the downtown architecture. The listing in the National Register of Historic Places extends benefits and protection to 1,400 acres of the city. There are over 2,000 historical buildings to visit in town.
2. Scottish Rite Masonic Temple: 900 East Oklahoma Avenue, Guthrie
Guthrie is also home to one of the world's largest Masonic Centers - The Scottish Rite Temple. It's a stunning piece of architecture to tour. The building is closed for inside tours until around March 2022, so be sure and check with them before visiting. When the tours are open visitors get to view 14 artistic rooms in the Temple. Tours are given twice a day, Monday - Thursday. The price of admission is only $5 per person. You can also take a virtual tour online while the inside is closed.
3. Oklahoma Territorial Museum: 406 East Oklahoma Avenue, Guthrie
Explore Oklahoma's early history at the Oklahoma Territorial Museum. As the first capital of the state, Guthrie holds a piece of important history. There are many exhibits and artifacts to explore, along with many interesting things to read about Oklahoma's early days. Take a ride on the First Capital Trolley.
The First Capital Trolley provides a variety of transportation services in town and is a fun experience to hop on and ride around town. It will definitely take you back in time.
While in Guthrie, be sure and stop into Mark's Drugstore. It opened in 1953 and is one of the oldest operating drug stores left in the Sooner State. This small town drugstore is still family-owned and operated and is a local hangout where everybody knows everybody. You can get your morning coffee, pick up your medicine, grab a gift and so much more. As they say in Guthrie, "You have not seen Guthrie if you don’t visit Mark’s Drug!"
