If you enjoy visiting historic places in Oklahoma, head to Ponca City to the Marland Mansion, an architectural masterpiece and museum open to the public for tours. This Mediterranean-style mansion tells the story of the oil tycoon E.W. Marland who once controlled one-tenth of the world's oil reserves. Today, it's open for tours and events and is a delightful day trip for anyone looking to learn more about the Marland family, and Oklahoma's oil history, or simply marvel at a beautiful historical mansion.
Situated on 30 acres on a hill in Ponca City is The Marland Mansion, a 43,561 square-foot masterpiece that was built in the 1920s. It is known as the "Palace on the Prairie" and was once one of the largest residences in the southwestern U.S.
The mansion is a National Historic Landmark and is now a museum and event center open to the public for tours for a nominal fee.
The home was built by oil tycoon E.W. Marland for $5.5 million dollars, including all the furnishings. The home took three years to build and was completed in 1928.
Inspired by a home in Florence, Italy, this Ponca City masterpiece boasts three floors of extravagant architecture. There are 55 rooms total, including 10 bedrooms and 12 bathrooms. The home was built as a showcase for fine art which you'll see during your tour.
The grounds of the mansion are comprised of 30 acres of beautiful land filled with lakes, gardens, and other buildings. Originally, the mansion sat on 2,500 acres, but over the years the land was sold off, and eventually, the ownership of the mansion was transferred to the city.
Also located on the grounds is Marland's Grand Home, a mansion-style home that was built in 1916. The home boasts 16,500 acres and today showcases many different exhibits about the Marland family, Oklahoma history, and more.
Looking for a beautiful event center? If so, the Marland Mansion can be rented out for private functions and gatherings. It is a stunning venue for any occasion but is especially gorgeous for weddings and receptions.
To learn more about the home and tour information, visit the official Marlan Mansion website or follow along on their Facebook page.
After enjoying the day at the museum, book a dinner reservation at the Rusty Barrell Supper Club in town. They are known for two things: great steaks and the best salad bar you have ever tasted.
