Summer will be here before you know it, so it's time to start thinking about what kinds of places you plan to explore outdoors this year when the weather is nice. Fortunately, the Buckeye State has plenty to do under the summer sun. Get out and seize the day with these 12 underrated, truly awesome places and events you'll only find in Ohio.
1. Discover Ohio's very own sapphire quarry.
Most people don’t know there’s a stunning, sapphire quarry in Sandusky County. Tucked away in the small town of Gibsonburg, Ohio, you’ll find White Star Quarry. It’s a little-known diving resort that Ohio explorers will fall in love with. 2. Camp along the shores of Lake Erie.
Perhaps one of the most beautiful and underrated campgrounds in Ohio is Kelley Island State Park. With stunning views of Lake Erie and ancient ruins to explore, this beautiful campground almost makes you forget you’re in Ohio. Click here for directions and more information.
3. Go on a safari...
Although Ohio is full of several impressive zoos, The Wilds in Cumberland offer a unique way to observe exotic animals. Depending on the tour option you choose, you can get an up-close encounter with the animals or board a Safari Transport so you can observe them (from a safe distance) roam freely while learning all about the rare and endangered species the facility conserves. 7. Take a canopy walk.
The Judith and Maynard H. Murch Canopy Walk at Holden Arboretum in Kirtland, Ohio features a 500 ft. long elevated walkway suspended 65 ft. above the forest floor. It gives visitors a truly unique perspective of the forest and the animals that live among the trees.

8. Visit a local winery.
Most people don’t realize Ohio is actually home to more than 150 wineries. There’s a place in Ohio where all wizards happily gather, the butter beer is plentiful and you can stroll down Diagon Alley. Although Ohio is no stranger to some pretty epic small town festivals, Kent takes the small town festival concept to a whole other level with Kent Potterfest. 12. Take a dip in the world's largest recirculating pool.
