Greater Cleveland is home to some magnificent parks, but the Ohio Department Of Natural Resources maintains all sorts of magnificent properties beyond our little metropolitan area. Today, we're going to explore the landscape near Mosquito Creek Wildlife Area...one breathtaking place where untouched forest, rare migratory birds, and overall serenity abounds. There's something for everyone at this beautiful park near Cleveland, and it's just about an hour away from home.
Welcome to Mosquito Creek Wildlife Area, a 9,021-acre gem just north of Warren.
This beautiful landscape is truly a sight to see, and all nature lovers should check it out.
This verdant and unblemished landscape is nestled against Mosquito Lake and the Mosquito Lake State Park, which was created in the 1940s to provide flood control and to supply water to industry downstream.
According to the Ohio Department Of Natural Resources (Ohio DNR) website, the site also once served as a public hunting ground until 1962. Today, select areas locally are still open to the public for controlled waterfowl and deer hunting.
The area is filled to the brim with wildlife, with birds being one of the easier-to-spot draws.
All sorts of unique birds have been spotted in the area. African cattle egret, long-eared owls, bald eagles, and more rule the skies... but keep your eyes on the ground, too, because the eastern massasauga rattlesnake also calls this landscape home.
Mosquito Creek Lake is a magnificent fishing spot, if you don't mind taking your fishing gear on a little road trip.
While the fishing area is located south of the refuge buoy line, it's not too hard to snag a catch here. All sorts of familiar fish like bass, walleye, crappies, bullheads, and more live here.
Hiking is a true treat at Mosquito Creek, as the landscape has a great deal of variety.
Swamps, meadows, streams, woods, and more provide variety that will enchant the eye. It's like another world, hidden far from the hustle and bustle of city life.
And if you're worried about the long drive out to the wildlife area, well... you really shouldn't be.
This is a drive through classic Ohio countryside that's so worth it. The windshield views are a treat all year round... just look at that blue sky.
After you're done exploring the lovely landscape of Mosquito Creek, you can unwind nearby at Greene Eagle Winery.
Greene Eagle Winery is a charming countryside wine house made famous for its annual headless horseman reenactment. It's the perfect place to unwind and take it easy after exploring portions of the 9,021-acre wildlife area nearby. Look for it at 2576 Davis Peck Rd, Cortland, OH 44410.
And located just 15 minutes away is the Old Stone House B&B, which is the perfect place to crash for the night.
Old Stone House is a magnificent bed and breakfast that's just around the corner from Mosquito Creek. It has a rich history dating back to circa 1815, and its ambiance and staff alike are charming and welcoming. You can find it at 8505 State Route 534, Mesopotamia, OH 44439.
