Cleveland contains a hidden world. All around the city are underground tributaries and brooks, forgotten quarries, and stunning man-made structures that have since been abandoned. We've forgotten some of the most intriguing pieces of our own history, but that doesn't mean they're going to disappear. Cleveland is home to a gorgeous brook that's almost completely culverted, but portions of its gorgeous stream still peak out in a few enchanting locations.
Lake View Cemetery is one of Cleveland's loveliest historical destinations.
With 285 acres and a history that spans back to 1869, it's no wonder this Victorian garden cemetery is so attractive to the living.
And though it is enthralling, it seems each trip to the cemetery brings something new.
Each time you return, you'll find new monuments to explore. You'll also spot fascinating marvels of nature that you hadn't noticed before, as is often the case with Daffodil Hill.
Have you ever noticed that there's a giant dam hidden in the expanse of Lake View Cemetery?
At 90 feet tall and some 500 feet long, this gargantuan concrete wall was the largest of its size east of the Mississippi when it was completed in 1978. This massive structure helped control flooding from Doan and Dugway Brooks.
Located just downstream from the dam in a secluded spit of Lake View Cemetery is a petite, multi-layered veil of a waterfall that few people even realize is there.
Dugway Brook, this lovely bluestone stream, flows into Lake Erie. It was once a well-known waterway before streets, structures, and other urban edifices covered its branches.
The majority of Dugway Brook is located in Cleveland Heights, but most of the brook is invisible today.
Pieces of the brook are still visible in Lake View Cemetery, Forest Hill Park, and just east of Coventry School. The brook once fueled early industry, but it became largely forgotten as urbanization took over what was once its habitat.
Now forgotten and neglected, this lovely natural stream often suffers from pollution problems.
Its few exposed sections, however, have enthralled some locals enough to take up local watershed conservancy efforts.
Its exposed portion in Lake View Cemetery glistens and gleams in every season, delighting visitors with a hidden little piece of Cleveland area history. Will you set out to find this hidden wonder?
