Adventure awaits all over the city of Cincinnati, but even more outdoor experiences can be had with just a short drive. The Queen City is close to several incredibly scenic areas, one of which is just two hours east of the city, along the Ohio River. Shawnee State Forest covers thousands of acres of natural wonders, and within the forest is Shawnee State Park. This underrated park is a great spot to call home base during a visit to this area, as it also offers miles of magical hiking trails that are ideal for any degree of adventure.
Shawnee State Park and the incredible Shawnee Lodge are located just a couple hours from Cincinnati. The park is a part of the 63,000-acre Shawnee State Forest - the largest in Ohio. The area is known for its outdoor recreation, and its hiking trails should definitely not be overlooked.
The park is close enough that you could make a day trip to explore a few miles of the extensive system that winds through the forest. There are plenty of trail options for any length or difficulty level.
The trails range from short and sweet to miles upon miles and completely off the grid. Of course, most will choose an option that falls somewhere in the middle.

Shawnee State Forest is often called "The Little Smokies," and that's evident as you explore the area on the various hiking trails. The rolling hills resemble mountains in the distance and the thick forest allows you to forget that you are still so close to Cincinnati.
In addition to the trails, there are many other activities and natural features in the park. Rent a boat and explore one of the lakes, play a round of mini golf or traditional golf, visit the nature center, or relax on a sandy beach.
Since you're likely to fall in love with this stunning region, make a weekend out of it with a stay at the Shawnee Lodge. There are a few different accommodation options and the lodge even has an indoor and outdoor swimming pool, overlooking those hills in the distance.
But don't forget to get out and explore the miles of hiking trails that take you through this historic forest. Not much has changed here over the centuries, and you're bound to have a magical experience while hiking these scenic trails near Cincinnati.
