In a city like Cincinnati that has so many incredible parks, most don't think to venture too far away for some outdoor fun. However, it is nice to get away and experience something new, and we are also perfectly positioned to do just that at a number of nearby destinations. Over in Carrollton, Kentucky, General Butler State Resort Park is situated on historic land that offers unique views and plenty of family fun. This underrated state resort park has something for everyone and makes for a great getaway from Cincinnati any time of year.
All the way back in 1931, General Butler State Resort Park became the 6th state park in Kentucky. This stunning land is the perfect spot for a park and luckily for Cincinnatians, it's less than an hour away.
As a resort park, General Butler offers many amenities and has multiple options for overnight accommodations. The Butler Lodge is worth a visit on its own if only to witness the unique architecture and amazing valley views.
The lobby of the lodge, as well as the restaurant within, offer sweeping views of the Ohio River Valley. The park is perched atop a hill and boasts a one-of-a-kind view of the convergence of the Kentucky and Ohio Rivers.
The 53 rooms in the lodge each open up either to the pool area or the hillside. For more privacy, you can also choose to stay in a one, two, or three-bedroom cottage. The park also has a year-round campground with over 100 sites.
When staying at the lodge, a cottage, or the campground, be sure to take advantage of all of the park's features. During the warmer months, take a dip in the scenic pool. You can also rent a canoe, rowboat, or pedal boat on the weekends. Also spend time on the miniature golf course, fishing on the banks of the lake, or playing tennis.
Be sure to save time to explore the park and learn about its history. There are two, short designated trails that will lead you through the park and to the views.
If you're looking for more adventure, try out the mountain biking trail. The park also offers scheduled tours of the historic buildings on the property and you can learn more about those on the park's website (linked below).
