Ohio's small towns are the best small towns, and we’re not shy to sing their praises. The Buckeye State is full of so many winsome little towns, each of which brings something unique to the table. Whether you’re looking for a beach retreat, a historic adventure, a mountain escape, or an Amish Country getaway, you’re sure to find it in Ohio. As we set our intentions for the upcoming year, make a resolution to visit these 12 charming small towns in Ohio, making each month a new adventure.
January: Granville
Let's ring in the new year with a step back in time. Granville is a special place with an interesting history. Unlike many settlements in the early 1800s, Granville was a planned community, founded in 1805 by people from the town of Granville, Massachusetts. Today, this New England influence -- and celebrated history -- can be felt all throughout town. Keep things extra cozy with a stay at the Granville Inn.
February: Medina
February is typically a month of lots of snow and ice in Ohio, and guess what? We're embracing it! Head to Medina, Ohio, for the annual Medina Ice Festival. Held annually each February, this winter fest is four days of frozen *and* free fun featuring over a hundred LED-lit ice sculptures and displays that are not to be missed!
March: Sugarcreek
In the heart of Ohio Amish Country, Sugarcreek is an impossibly charming locale that's a taste of the Old World. Known as the "The Little Switzerland of Ohio," you'll find the German and Swiss heritage on proud display throughout town. Don't forget to stop by Broad Run Cheese for some of their award-winning Swiss!
April: Bellefontaine
It's no April Fool's joke; Bellefontaine is home to "America's Oldest Concrete Street" and "The World's Shortest Street!" In addition to its superlative streets, Bellefontaine is an undeniably charming small town with a full resume of historic points of interest, attractions, and local businesses that are fabulous to explore on foot.
May: Yellow Springs
Artsy and welcoming, the town of Yellow Springs positively buzzes in May as its college lets out for the summer. Colorful local shops, tons of amazing eateries, and access to some of Southwest Ohio's most scenic parks make Yellow Springs *the* place to explore in the early days of summer.
June: Loveland
Loveland is a darling town about 15 miles north of Cincinnati that has it all: a bustling downtown, gorgeous outdoor spaces (including a front-row seat to the Little Miami River *and* Loveland Bike Trail), and whimsical touches like quaint farms and even a castle! During the summer, there's nothing better than paddling down the Little Miami and then enjoying a meal outdoors at one of the town's many quaint restaurants.
July: Vermilion
Impossibly charming and rapturously beautiful, Vermilion is Ohio's very own slice of paradise. Quaint, friendly, and magically beautiful, Vermilion is comparable to the coastal cities of a dreamy fairytale. This "Harbour Town" is a fantastic place to drop anchor and stay a while. This city was once known as the Village of Lake Captains, and it has flawlessly maintained sailor homes of yore. Vermilion's historic streets are sure to enchant visitors with their unbeatable atmosphere.
August: Coshocton
Conveniently located just an hour from Columbus, the charming town of Coshocton will make you feel worlds away from it all. Climb aboard the Monticello III and you’ll feel like you are actually gliding right into Ohio history! This horse-led canal boat runs from late May through late October and is a delightful way to celebrate the waning summer season in Ohio.
September: Gallipolis
Situated along the Ohio River, Gallipolis is easily one of the most charming and picturesque small towns in Ohio. Gallia County began as a haven for French settlers in 1790 and today is a getaway for travelers seeking a haven of their own. The downtown area boasts incredible dining opportunities, cozy cafes, and locally owned shops perfect for perusing.
October: Athens
Known as the most haunted town in Ohio, Athens is pure Gothic glory come October. With one of the oldest universities in the United States and a former insane asylum, Athens, Ohio, is home to numerous ghosts and haunted lore. Come and wander the campus at nightfall, and tell us you don't feel the presence of some unsettled spirits.
November: Zoar
The German village of Zoar, Ohio, is one of those tiny towns that's firmly under the radar, and we're making it our mission to change that. Beautifully preserved and full of fun places to explore, you're sure to fall in love with this little-known town. It's especially magical during November and December; the entire town is outfitted with old-fashioned decorations and twinkle lights, with carolers and carriage rides making Zoar a place of pure holiday spirit.
December: Lebanon
Lebanon, Ohio, is lovely all year long, but December is when this town quite literally shines. There's something extra special about visiting Lebanon during the holiday season, in which the town dazzles with twinkling lists, red-and-green wreaths, and loads of festivals ... and festive fun! In fact, if you're looking for your very own Hallmark holiday movie experience, visit during the annual Lebanon Horse Drawn Carriage Parade, an event bursting with holiday spirit and cheer.
We have some big love for our small towns in Ohio, and hope you make a point to visit all of the above places this year!
