When you live in Northern California, finding yourself a scenic outdoor spot to take in the beauty isn't hard. In fact, you'll find natural beauty just about everywhere you go in NorCal. However, there's one place that may just be one of the most beautiful in the state. Sonoma Coast State Park is a coastal paradise complete with serene beaches, hiking trails, and stunning overlooks. It's a nature lover's dream come true and you simply have to experience its beauty for yourself.
Welcome to Northern California's own little paradise: the Sonoma Coast. Comprised of several beaches and endless rocky bluffs, Sonoma Coast State Park stretches for 17 miles along this beautiful coastline.
The park spans from Bodega Head to Vista Trail and is easily accessible from multiple points along coast Highway 1. With so much natural beauty to explore, the park is ideal for all sorts of nature lovers from beachcombers and fishermen to sunbathers and hikers.
One of the park's most iconic spots is Bodega Head, a rocky headland at Bodega Harbor. Hiking trails around the harbor allow access to small, tucked-away coves, and the high cliffs above provide the perfect vantage point for observing whales and other ocean life.
Goat Rock is another must-see destination within the park. Located near the mouth of the Russian River, the area boasts an easily accessible sandy beach along with picnic tables and restroom facilities. Be aware that dogs are NOT allowed at Goat Rock Beach due to the beach being home to a colony of harbor seals.
There are many other beaches in the park that you'll want to explore. Duncan's Landing once aided as a landing for small coastal ships (mainly with lumber and food.) Today, it's known for its dangerous, unpredictable surf and beautiful display of spring wildflowers.
It's important to remember that the Sonoma Coast is NOT for swimming. Like much of the North Coast, the beaches in Sonoma Coast S.P. features strong rip currents, heavy surfy, and sudden ground swells. You can prevent disasters by keeping an eye on children and never turning your back to the ocean.

Desert hiking in California. Doesn't get much better than that, right? The stillness of the air, the wide expanse of blue sky. The dust clouds kicked up from my hiking boots. Sounds pretty dreamy to me. If hiking in Southern California is also one of your hobbies, then might I suggest a beautiful stunner in Joshua Tree National Park just over three miles and moderately challenging. The Fortynine Palms Oasis Trail is a beauty in the desert, with some incredible highlights and a cool oasis at the end.
The Fortynine Palms Oasis Trail in Joshua Tree National Park is a hidden gem worth exploring for anyone looking to get some exercise and soak up the sun. With an elevation change of over 600 feet, this desert hike has a bit of a kick to it, so prepare accordingly. It's rated as moderately challenging due to its rocky terrain, sun exposure, and occasional steep sections, but it’s well-marked and accessible. Just make sure to pack enough water, sunscreen, and the right footwear.
This trail begins with a steady ascent over a series of rocky hills. The path is surrounded by classic Joshua Tree scenery, including cholla cacti, barrel cacti, and views of desert mountains. While there isn’t much shade along the way, the higher vantage points provide sweeping views of the desert landscape, adding to the experience.
At the end of the trail lies the Fortynine Palms Oasis, a natural oasis fed by underground springs and dotted with fan palms. It’s a striking sight in the middle of the desert, with lush greenery contrasting with the dry surroundings. The oasis has pools of water (though they may be dry depending on the season), and it’s a fantastic spot for photos and relaxation. Many hikers find it a refreshing place to rest before making the return journey.
The best times to hike are fall through spring, as summer temperatures can soar to dangerous levels. You'll want to plan your trip accordingly, not just based on the seasons, but also around the sun since there is minimal shade. Early morning or late afternoon is ideal, especially in warmer months, to avoid the midday sun.
Wildlife watching is an option here as you'll likely come across a few desert-dwellers on your journey. Keep an eye out for desert wildlife, such as lizards, birds, and the occasional bighorn sheep, particularly around the oasis. It's a gathering spot for hydration!
As always, make sure to stick to the trail since you'll be surrounded by a sensitive ecosystem, and follow the Leave No Trace principles.
